London Trip

London Description

Departure from Canterbury Bus Station at 8.20am:
We are very excited to go to London on our own: We decided to visit the Museum of  London in the morning and do the shopping in the afternoon.


 We are on board of National Express (from Canterbury to London 15£ return----> 2 hours) GREAT!!! What are we doing on the bus? easy! Giorgos is reading (not for Uni!!!!) and I listen to music (Imany, You will never know... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4tF9EnbcxU) She has a wonderful voice, lots of soul, and warmth... Thanks Itunes! Then, Adele and Selah Sue and other albums!

Arrival at the Victoria Station !!!

Towards Barbican Station to visit the Museum of London: 


- London before London:
During the prehistoric period, London was a tundra called the Thames valley occupied by different human species. The river Thames played a maggior part in people's life.

- Roman London: 
The Roman occupation of Britain began by the annexation of both sides of the Thames, and Londonium became a communication and a trading town.

- Medieval London
From the Anglo-Saxon settlement to the Norman Conquest of 1066 and Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. London's merchants and craftsmen were considered as privileged citizens. London became more and more richer, the population increased but was decimated by the Black Death in the 1340s. The architecture changed, creation of the massive St Paul's Cathedral.

- War plague and fire 1550s-1660s
 London was a wealthy city (Queen Elizabeth I) but religion still divided loyalties: England was threaten by invasions. It was the Shakespeare's London and plays were performed in the Rose Theater.
1640s: London and the Civil War (King Charles I was executed for treason in 1649)
1665: The Plague
1666: The Great Fire

- Expanding City 1660s-1850s
 London, the big city of the UK, and also, a vast empire. Growth of population, power, and economy.
London was Britain's largest manufacturing center.
1850s: Victoria was on the throne and London housed the Great Exhibition
London a place of amusement: theaters, music, workshops, warehouses and prison.

- The Victorian Walk

- People's city 1850s 1950s

Rich and poor lived in a separate world.Technology changed the life in London (telephone, motorvehicles, electricity....)


- World City 1950s - today

God Save the Queen!
It was revolution time. London was and is a truly cosmopolitan world city!

7pm:
Victoria Station, we are going back  to Canterbury by bus. Exhausted and really happy!!!!
